I think the economic logic is:

- People want good & cheap blogging software
- They provide a very good one for free to download, to build a brand
and the best software through a free software project
- Some of the bloggers won't want to take care of the hosting, but will
rather have Wordpress than another software
- Their hosting plateform then becomes the best place to host it - even
if only a very small fraction of the bloggers use it, they will still
have a lot more customers than if they did everything closed from the
start (because of brand notoriety, and software quality)
