Actually I'm all for anyone wanting to host Barcamp because it's cool.
If you can host a cool Barcamp and get high quality participation than
you've achieved something and recognition is deserved. We should be so lucky
as to have our little un-conference be well received and highly considered
that there is competition amongst universities and other organizations to
host us. This is a GOAL not a bad thing.
I personally think that we, as participants, have to keep "raising the
bar" for Barcamp. Now more and more people know what it's about and
understand how it works. Let's really push for doing an overnight event. You
can't fully appreciate how much better participation in terms of quality you
get when the people attending are committed enough to do this until you've
been to one.
I don't care about the quantity of people, frankly. Most barcamps are
100 or less and they are very worth while. I also don't want to be some
"elite" group that prohibits people from coming - quite the opposite. I want
ANYONE who has the commitment to participate to join in - whatever that
number may be. But frankly I'm not interested in entertaining or sponsoring
folks who are there just cause it's "cool". I want people there because
they're interested in what the event has to offer and feels that they may
have some small part to play in that. And that's really all it takes - will
& execution. Just do it.
