Dear Mike and Fellow Bar Campers, Thank you for posting the announcement. I just want to say publicly, what I wrote you: You are all welcome at both the RMS speech and also the conference. You would broaden the discussions and bring deeper expertise, I'm sure. So, please plan to come.
http://flossedbk.flossed.org/about (brief list of workshops) http://flossedbk.flossed.org/workshoplist The general public is invited to the RMS speech (RMS talks are not technical). Title: "The Free Software Movement: Your Freedom as a Software User" My opinion: If you would take some time to spread the word about RMS you would be doing a favor to us and also Thailand. Even those who disagree with Stallman have to admit that he's sharp, raises important issues and gets us to make more careful decisions about the software we use. In the current confused hype of Windows 7 taking over the world for half a month's salary at a local wage, intelligent presentation of facts meant to help you, not hype you, are worth a lot. In addition to the all-important help of spreading the word/ encouraging the general public to come, we would love help with: * Simultaneous translation equipment donation * Translation at the conference sessions. Any ideas? FSF.ORG announcement: http://www.fsf.org/events/20091030bangkok * Why we are charging for a "Free Software" event: I get this question frequently and now realize that it's one of those "teachable moments": did you know that you can sell Free Software, and that "Free" is about freedom, not price? If they're interested, you can point out that FS is not the same as freeware or shareware. The point is that knowledge about licensing issues is woefully thin among techies let alone the general public. So, coming to hear RMS will be an eye opener. Oh, and why are we charging? Because we have to pay for travel, food and lodging for RMS, for the people organizing the event (not me!) or they can't afford to do so. Full stop (aka "period"). We were hoping to cover expenses by charging for admission, but so far, this is just a distant dream. Finally, perhaps we can add a bit of bar campism to this conference, and then plan a real one in about 6 months? Or is that too soon? Maybe just replace this traditional conference with that one. Next time, we hope to convince Michael Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, to come. (I think that about covers the remaining (alive) relevant old radicals who started this whole thing, doesn't it?) Please join us. I look forward to joining the next barcamp in Bangkok.
