It should be possible to run a 18.2 client on an older director. This documentation describes the way how to run a non encrypted connection:

Hi,

I have built bareos 17.2 on a debian 9 system myself.

Now, one of my clients (also debian 9), where I installed bareos by apt
upgraded to 18.2.

Unfortunately the director can not connect to the client any more, I
suppose, this is a version problem.

Now I want to uninstall bareos 17.2 and then upgrade to 18.2 using apt.
Unfortunately "make uninstall" is not available.

Does anyone have any hints on how to uninstall bareos 17.2 which was
installed by compiling it?

Best regards and thanks in advance,

Otto
