The advantage is that anybody can use it in his personally preferred way. Many may prefer the mailing-list usage, which also makes it possible to sync it in the mail client for offline reading, eg. while travelling on a train. Additionally, using http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.sysutils.backup.bareos.user provides various ways of access including RSS feeds and NNTP. I think the way it is now provides the most flexible options to match personal preferences for taking part in discussions. Which advantage would an additional separate forum have?
