Could it be related to powerdown (powersave) of the usb device, which took too 
long to answer during the label command ?

Perhaps you could find an option to minimize the powerdown effect on that 
perticular devices in the power management panel ?

I remember using usbcore.autosuspend=-1 on certain linux here to avoid too 
much trouble with external usb3 toshiba disks. Eventually you need an 
equivalent.
