I know what you mean. I don't think that Bareos has that but I may be wrong.
We also moved from Amanda over to Bareos, and generally like it, but there are
a few things I miss from Amanda. The spooling behavior is one of them. You can
spool to disk with Bareos before writing to tape, and I do strongly suggest
turning on the "spool data" knob for your jobs that write to tape. It helps
tape performance, but it isn't the two-stage system that Amanda has where the
backup jobs keep spooling to disk while the tape writers work.
What we do is backup most systems to disk first and then use "copy" jobs to
migrate the data to tape. That allows us to quickly restore the most recent
backup without having to get the tape. And you could set the retention of the
disk jobs really low so that you use little disk space.
We also do this, and it works quite nice. We use local disk storage for our
on-site backups and then once a week we write LTO tapes for off-site backups.
Bareos has a really nice always incremental approach where each backup is an
incremental (OK, other than the first backup) which dramatically reduces the
backup times and the impact on the clients.
Then once a week we do a virtual full backup to tape. The virtual full backups
use the on-disk backups from the daily jobs as the source and simply build a
synthetic full backup on tape. The virtual full backup is as current as your
most recent daily. All with out any involvement of the clients at all.
