If you have installed the default rpm or deb package there's normally already 
a job called catalog. this job export the director catalog database (sql dump) 
and save it.

About restoring the Director there's a chapter director kaboom in the 
documentation which will give you the needed instruction.

You're off course free the adjust all the nuts and bolts to your need ;-)
