I've been using Heartbeat of 60 between the components already.

I found that the network administrator had made some changes to the
router/firewall between the systems that wasn't supposed to effect them.
However once he removed the changes, the problem went away.

Could be dropping connections between components.
Try adding Heartbeat Interval = 2 minutes into the dir,sd, and client resources.

Subject: [bareos-users] connection to SD dropped

This past week I started getting the following errors consistently from on
client:
2018-12-14 14:49:13

mn-server-dir JobId 38851: Fatal error: Network error with FD during Backup:
ERR=Connection reset by peer

2018-12-14 14:49:13

mn-server-dir JobId 38851: Error: Director's comm line to SD dropped.

2018-12-14 14:49:13

mn-server-dir JobId 38851: Fatal error: No Job status returned from FD.

The server is Ubuntu using bareos 17.2.4. The client is Windows, it was using
16.X and today I upgraded it to 17.2.4 to match. The upgrade did not help.

Between the last successful backup and the first failure I rebooted both
systems. Other than that, no changes have been made, especially to the bareos
configuration.

Any suggestions on debugging this?
