The client protocol didn't change much between 14 and 17. As 18.2
director/sd still supports 17.2 filedaemons it will probably work.
However, you'll need to try this for yourself.

I don't like to advertise here, but we would probably provide a more
recent (17.2 or even 18.2) prevista-filedaemon to our subscription
customers if requested.

I suspect that many companies have age old, non internet connected systems which will be in the backup schedule because no one is able to recreate these machines from scratch.
