You can read (backup) your data directly through a gluster node or you can 
do it through a gluster client. If you read directly from a node, there's a 
possibility you won't have accurate information at all times (split-brain).

Also, when restoring data, your best bet would be through a gluster client. 
There's probably a way to write data directly to a gluster cluster, but 
I've only done that through a client.
