Our test configuration is
NFS => fd (VM) => sd/droplet (VM) => S3 (AWS)

The throughput is of order 14MiB/sec for backing up a single large file

A test backup to our local ceph system had similar performance.

The default VM connections are 1Gbit. The NFS server's connection is
10Gbit I doubt that our internal networking is an issue.

Is this kind of speed what other people are seeing?
If you are seeing better speeds, are you using something other than default
configuration for  your S3 server?

Thank you for any pointers,
