Thank you, I thought I had tried the .conf extension earlier, but I think I 
included it on the file name as well, which no doubt confused the system. 
Naturally I had to make a few corrections to the job configs but sudo -u 
bareos bareos-dir -t showed  me where they were  needed and a bit of 
searching of the documentation sorted me out.
I'm very grateful for your help.
