hm. til now, when re-using a tape, i deleted the volume, purged it using mt weof and re-labeled the barcode in bconsule

You almost never re-label a tape but rather purge and recycle as things expire. So it’s a onetime setup. BTW other tape systems I have used same behavior. Using a tape changer, when I send a label barcode command, the tape in the drive is unloaded and a different one is loaded for labeling. Later the unloaded tape is loaded again and labeled.
