I just realized this had become a private conversation and not a list
conversation. I did not intend that.

The superuser requirement is no big deal as I can just alias it as such: alias
bbch="sudo /usr/sbin/bcharge" but it seems like you'd want to be able to plug
in your bb without worrying about running any commands at all. I guess I will
just wait for the next binary to roll out to see if this changes any. Thanks
for all the help!

I cannot imagine why RIM would care about forcing the use of their desktop
software since they do not seem to change for it. All the lock-in seems to
accomplish is to make the bb yet another windows-only device. What am I
missing?

bcharge goes in sbin because it's a binary that is intended to be run as a
superuser (root).

bcharge needs root access because it modifies USB port parameters (by
manually overriding milliAmpres the port is set to).

For some reason RIM asks the BB's to report "100mA" maximum power, and then,
of course, immediately has the device complain when it receives the current it
asks for (and no more).

You can try asking them, but I believe it's a form of attempted vendor
lock-in, to help ensure you're running RIM Software (ie, have Blackberry
Desktop installed, which manually overrides that for you in Windows).

I wonder if the reason it does not launch has anything to do with the fact
that /usr/sbin is not in my path. Why would the bin go there and not /usr/bin?

Slight bit of misinformation. I didn't read your bcharge output closely. I
thought it said something about the USB port already being at 500mA as well.

Hotplug rules HAVE changed in CVS relatively recently, so you may wish to
play around to see if bcharge runs automatically for you, or take a peek at CVS
to see what's changed. You shouldn't need to run bcharge manually if your Linux
distribution uses Hotplug (Fedora does).

I think this goes back to the list.

I *think* "Pearl" mode is just text. It doesn't especially matter, except
that the device you have is in the same "class" as the Pearl -- my 8300 says
that too.

The reason your port has already been switched is likely because the Hotplug
rules are working right. In other words, as soon as you plug in your BB the
system matches the device ID against the hotplug rules, and automatically runs
bcharge for you.

My 8300 (and a lot of the 'newer' devices) support USB storage mode. In other
words, if it is enabled on the device, it'll act like any normal USB storage
device -- like a portable harddrive or thumbdrive. This is the mode I use, but
I'm not familiar enough with your model to say what sort of options you have.

  Best,
  ~Miz

Thanks again. I still have a few questions regarding the ware though. It is
terrific that someone out there with more geek than me is doing this. I'd be
happy to help in anyway I can in terms of testing. So I do believe I have
gotten the unit to charge properly by doing this:

  [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ /usr/sbin/bcharge
  Scanning for Blackberry devices...
Found device #099...adjusting charge setting...adjusting Pearl mode to
dual...done

Although I have an 8830 not a Pearl. The next thing I'd really love to do is
transfer files back and forth from it. Is this something I can do with barry?

  No worries. :)

I mean mainly as far as the code is concerned; CVS has a few extra niceties
but nothing especially drastic so as to request you run out and grab a fresh
copy.

I believe the release version is still currently 0.8.
  Didn't mean to be confusing!

Really?? I thought I grabbed the most recent available version. Any who,
thanks for the suggestion. I see some other tools in there... bcharge, btool,
ktrans, etc. I can run them as root but not as myself. Might be a pathing
issue. Thanks!
