Right some build essentials I did not mention are,

1. Debian/Sid on amd64 architecture
2. I am using CVS source
3. Yes I am using an 8100, Pearl

I created a calendar event in the 8100 and then synced with Evo..  This
way works perfectly - at least the experiment produced the same named
and same detailed Calendar event.  As a side the 0.22 Evo. opensync
plugin evo2-sync is considered broken by the developer.  That is it is
probably the Evo. plugin that is failing.  As evidence others using
different PIMs have not experienced this severity of problems.

I am also quite swamped so I can't readily adapt contact.cc to
calendar.cc, when you do I will test, however.
