I have now done some testing on an fc8 i386 machine. I have the same problem with categories as the x86_64 machine. If I try to set contact categories on the pc side with kontact, syncing will fail with the same apparent memory leak problem. Multisync reports a sync problem and then goes into the loop where it is using most of the processor, and with top I can see it rapidly increasing its memory usage.
In order to recover, I kill the process (os???? can't remember what it's named). I then go back into kontact, and unset the category for the contact which I previously set in kontact, close kontact, and then run multisync. During syncing, I see (not sure if always) the dialog asking for a conflict to be manually resolved. To do the fix, the barry-sync selction has to be picked. The syncing then completes OK. I hope this helps the developers to find the problem since this is a limitation.
