The USB database is for identifying devices by usb product and manufacturer ids similar to the ids used in the pci info spec and mirrored by the pci info database which linux uses when you do an lspci. No the problem is that almost all blackberry devices identify themselves by function instead of by kind. so all blackberries are 0001, 0004 and 0006 depending on mode. But I have done research on the raw data returned by the device that used in the barry bidentify program and can to a degree of certainty detect what blackberry device it is from that data. As such it can only be presented to the user via a blackberry specific app, exactly the kind of data hal was invented to hold. Although it would be nice to have the real specifications from RIM, those bastards.
