Users of binary distros already have to pick versions based on what 
dependencies they have installed.  Source distros (Gentoo) take care of the 
dependencies for the user. There is no need to make groups because they would 
work for very few people.

Keeping lock step is artificial, and when they are in lock step, they may as 
well not be separate products.  Also, can't tell where contribs may fall, so 
can't tell which will advance faster.
