Actually, it points away from the kernel. Your admin friend was on the
right path. Now we just have to figure out what is being run by udev.
I should try to rustle up a Ubuntu box and retest... I was sure this worked
on 8.04. In the meantime, try running the following as root, and send
a sample of the output while plugging in your device:
udevmonitor --env
