Chris,

I was hoping you didn't ask this question.  What happened is that I have 
a sierra
wireless card built into my Lenovo T61p.  wvdialconf
discovered its tty and I naively assumed this was my 8830 running under 
the cdc-acm.
Duhhhhhhhh.
