The devel list is fine. That is where all the discussion happens.
I've been busy lately and have fallen behind on Barry email, but
the devel list is the right spot. :-)

I'll cc this answer to the list for you.

Wow.. quite the Blackberry destruction story! :-)

The format of the backup tar.gz files is really just raw record
data straight from the device. In theory, it should be possible
to do a sync with a backup file, but this need has never come up,
and the code isn't designed to handle that.

If you plan on getting a new Blackberry, you can restore the old
backup into the new device, and do a sync that way. Of course,
if you get a new device, you run the risk of hitting some
compatibility issues, since Barry doesn't support all of the new
devices, such as the Storm.

I'd like to make Barry a little more flexible, so that parsing of
data does not require a Blackberry, and this seems like a good
opportunity. I can't give any deadline promises, but I could try
to add sync-from-backup-file functionality, which would help you
out of your quandry.

Sorry I don't have a more immediate answer.

Good luck,
- Chris
