Hmmm.... I don't see a huge difference in our opening sequence, but maybe I'm blind to it. I seem to see that you send a command back to the device after receiving a "special code" packet. Is that unused code for you, now that you're not seeing those special packets from the device? (line 298, kernel/modem.c) Side note: Your CVS commit messages indicate that using a PPP MTU of <= 384 bytes helped avoid resets.
