Hi,

I started evaluating the hostedapp wikis provided by sourceforge.
They've got two: mediawiki (the same as used for wikipedia) and trac
comes with a wiki as well.

I didn't take a closer look at the trac wiki since you were looking for
a wiki only.

In general, mediawiki offers:
 * Full backups.
 * Sending email notifications on a per page and on a global basis.
 * Editor tracking.
 * Page history; I couldn't find any specs whether it's indefinite.

Sourceforge doesn't give a lot of information about it's settings:
 * They offer & encourage users to make backups but don't explain what's
   included. (I suppose, it's a full backup but supposing isn't
   knowing.)
 * Notifications on a global basis can not be activated through user
   management but are managed through a global php-array. (mediawiki's
   fault.)
 * Editor tracking is enabled at least for the mediawiki that are
   attached to user accounts. (I opened one for my user account to toy
   around. Sourceforge doesn't say, whether project attached hostedapps
   have the same configuration as user account attched.)

But it's even worse: I activated a sourceforge wiki for my user account
and discovered that the mail-function is broken. To receive notification
mails, each wiki-user has to confirm his mail address for mediawiki
separately. However the mail containing the mediawiki confirmation code
never reached me. I filed a bug report three days ago but it's still
unanswered.

My impression is, that mediawiki as hostedapp is still in testing and
lacks ease of use and sourceforge specific documentation. We might
eventually be able change the systemwide configuration by sending
feature/support requests (depending on their installation architecture).
 That'll take some time before it's up and running.

Unless you disagree (if you consider using the trac hostedapp for
example) I'll keep an eye on the progress mediawiki is taking at
sourceforge and start editing the existing documentation meanwhile.

Bye, Simon
