Yikes, that's ancient. :-)

Snapshot 20090109 would likely not have the usb_set_altinterface()
fix that helps on kernels 2.6.28 and newer.

This is most likely the cause of your timeout issue.

Sure.  Start with 'barrybackup -d' and the USB traffic will be dumped
to the terminal as you work.  Cut and paste a screenful or so to the
mailing list after it fails.
