I don't have access to BIS or BES as I'm with a carrier that doesn't have a
Blackberry service. I'm hoping to use my Blackberry with a standard data
service for web based services and so want to use javaloader to install
Opera or something similar.

The cable works fine with other devices such as my digital SLR camera.

I haven't been able to test the Blackberry with RIM's software as all the
computers in our household are Linux.
