I got this one from my friend Rocket J. Squirrel (who BTW actually got permission to use the name on the air, how cool is that?). I thought this might be of interest to enthusiasts of pre-digitalia and things mechanical. Read on:

The Crank Ensemble
Kurt Morgan/Spacebrewer Duo
Dr. Bob
Moe! Staiano's new series continues for the second and
final time at Epic Arts. December 7th listing is as follows: The Crank
Ensemble, Kurt Morgan/Spacebrewer Duo, Dr. Bob.
The Crank Ensemble, ("Making New Music Seem Easy"), performs improvised music using Larnie Fox's Hand Cranked
Instruments. Cranks are the mechanical equivalent of digital loops. Each
instrument has a contact microphone (piezo) and a hand-crank, and most have
a feather- spine that acts as a plectrum that rotates when the
hand-crank is cranked. As the plectrum rotates, it plucks something that
vibrates and is amplified. The "something" that vibrates is in some
cases a rubber band, in some wires sticking up, in one it is a
metal strip, and in another one is a heavy spring. By using cranks, we
are able to create rhythmic and repetitive patterns easily. We can
alter the sound by altering the crank's speed and direction, and we
can also use plucking and scratching. By working in an ensemble, we
can create layers of sound.
Kurt Morgan (guitar and vocals) is a local Oakland player in the experimental scene and Spacebrewer hails from Chicago.
Dr. Bob is David Michalak - Lap Steel and Bob Marsh - Cello, Voice. Dr Bob plays songs for a bitter world including "What Do We
Have?", "What Do We Do?", "What Do We Have To Do?", and others from
their upcoming CD, "Dark Times."
