Russell Schweickart, Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 9 and the first person to
step outside a spacecraft without an umbilical cord, also served as
Commissioner of Energy for the state of California. He was the founder and
president of the Association of Space Explorers, the professional
organization of astronauts and cosmonauts. Schweickart is currently
Chairman of the Board of the B612 Foundation, dedicated to protecting the
future of humanity by developing and demonstrating ways to deflect
asteroids that are heading our way. He will discuss what we know about the
threat of cosmic rocks and the various ways that have been suggested for
saving the Earth from large asteroid impacts, including both nuclear and
non-nuclear alternatives.
