[And yes, either the internet ASCII or my software seems to transmogrify what are probably quotation marks on yours into interrogation points, not that this is a Problem.] Believe me, the right kind of weeds -- something a cut above being marginally edible -- can be difficult to find, and extremely expensive to collect, in reasonable variety and the amounts needed for a restaurant. Not that I wouldn't think seriously about it at least ten times before paying c. 60 dollars for a meal, mind you. Even if it were Really Good Sushi. My back yard can (& probably will) supply enough _shiso_ (Perilla frutescens), during the next month or so, to satisfy at least three small restaurants (the kind of little mom&pop hole-in-the-wall ones I can afford to eat at reasonably often), and it's technically growing as a weed (if you don't count my watering it occasionally now that The Rains are over), but a little _shiso_ goes a long way, and I've never heard of it being used as a Main Dish. Don Fitch, who was about as active in BArea Fandom as it was practical for someone living in the LArea to be, between 30 and 45 years ago, and is somewhat bemused to see that San Jose is now included. Gee Whiz, San Jose was considered "somewhere out around Modesto & Salinas" in the days when few Fans had access to one of these new-fangled Horseless Carriages. -- _______________________________________________ basfa mailing list [email protected] http://vesta.wallis.com/mailman/listinfo/basfa
