Con? What con?

You missed some nice people: Karisu, Richard Man, John and Chris
O'Halloran, Dave Clark, Bill and me. Oh, plus Chris Garcia and Ed.

Lots of problems. For a con that had essentially one programming track,
how do you get scheduling conflicts? Really. I kid you not.

Badges? They didn't need no stinkin' badges. They took the wristbands
like the ones Kevin and Andy use to identify those over 21 for drinks,
hand printed your name on them, and then stuck a sticky picture of you
on the wristband. Not impressive.

The photos are kinda cute but *why*? No rhyme or reason existed to the
numbering system that they put on your wristband. At least, none that
anyone could figure out.

We arrived Saturday afternoon, where most conventions would have the
artist gallery walk area (in front of the dealers room and art show)
crowded with people. No problem at this convention. I could have rolled
a bowling ball down the walkway and not hit anyone - unless the ball
hooked because of the carpeting or something funky.

The great big marshall arts tournament that was supposed to last all
day? Well, only five junior entries showed up, and from what I heard,
it was over in something like thirty to sixty minutes. The marshall
arts people left immediately afterwards and did not stick around.
Surprise, surprise. (Not really. This is what I told Terry would
happen.)

The art show had *no* original artwork. Nada. None. They had a few
lithographs. No 3D sculptures. Just flat lithographs.

Well, if you're the type that doesn't like crowds because you get
bumped, you would have loved this convention. No one was getting bumped
because you had lots of space to wander around in. They had more
dealers in the dealers room than they had people walking through there.
Really sad. I think only one dealer is going to break even, and
everyone else is going to lose their shirts. One benefit: Dave Clark
and I found a couple of dealers to encourage to apply for being in the
CC26 dealers room.

Thing is, they allowed large spaces. They used the same layout that
BayCon used: same two sections for the dealers room, art show right
next door, artist gallery by the front windows. Registration is the
same place that you're used to.

Dave Gallagher: Dave Clark noted that dealer room tables that were
eight feet long were being used. You'll want to talk with Dave, and
then probably the hotel people about this.

Until later--

Carole
