Well, the online OED wants $300 for a subscription, so I'm going with
Merriam-Webster instead. The definition that www.m-w.com has is this,
showing your spelling as a legitimate variant:
me·di·e·val
Variant(s): also me·di·ae·val \mē-ˈdē-vəl, mi-, me-, -dē-ˈē-vəl\
Function: adjective
Etymology: New Latin medium aevum Middle Ages
Date: 1827
1 : of, relating to, or characteristic of the Middle Ages
2 : having a quality (as cruelty) associated with the Middle Ages
3 : extremely outmoded or antiquated
Definition 3 seems to refer to the spelling you cite. :-P
Best,
Glenn

On the grounds that if there was no America at the time you guys have
no place telling how we should spell it. :-)

Run my name through your computer
Mention me in passing to your college tutor
Check my records, check my facts
Check if I paid my income tax
Pour over everything in my C.V.
But you'll still know nothing about me.
