Well, I was there late Sunday afternoon into evening. I arrived around
4 p.m. and purchased a one day membership. Cosplay and Costume Contest
was supposed to happen in the evening after the dinner buffet (rather
nice, actually), but it got changed to earlier when they figured out
that three-quarters of the cosplayers were minors, and San Mateo has a
minors curfew.
I didn't object to their changing the time to accommodate the kids, but
no signage was up - not even an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper near reg -
stating this. They supposedly went around telling people about it an
hour before it happened, but since I wasn't there, I didn't hear it.
So, I missed the cosplay.
Wandering around, I saw three people in costumes. I gave them some
badge ribbons that I had made up, forgetting that Con-X-Treme doesn't
do badges. They do wristbands. This time, they did not have photos on
the wristbands like they did last year.
The dealers room was sad. They had enough tables setup to accommodate
anyone who would want to be there, but they only had like a half dozen
or so dealers. The dealers were spread out, and I would have liked
having them closer together, but that's my preference. Fortunately,
most of the dealers will be at SiliCon, so if you're going to SiliCon,
you'll see them there.
I have no idea of numbers. If the majority of the attendees attended
the dinner buffet, I would estimate around four dozen.
Mind you, it was a nice enough crowd. Most of what I did was smoffing
with Craig Nicolai, Bill Hay, Terry Meadows, Rob Miles, and Maurine
Starkey. Lots of conversation with Mo.
So, I wound up having a good time, but if I had arrived cold not
knowing anyone, I would not have been impressed. Then again, I missed
the majority of the day's programming, so that is probably not a fair
assessment of Con-X-Treme. I would be interested to know if anyone was
able to attend any of the programming, and how many people they thought
showed up.
Until later--
Carole
