The next live broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera is the Met production of
Salome by Richard Strauss, with Finnish soprano Karita Mattila in the title
role. It's subtitled in English, all the better for getting the specific
meaning of each line (they're called Met Titles). These broadcasts also have
intermission features and interviews backstage, when there are intermissions.
Salome is a short (about 100 minutes) one act opera. It's a tour de
force--what with the Dance of the Seven Veils and the love scene with the head
of John the Baptist--and you're not committing three or four hours to it.

I'm planning to catch this at the AMC Cupertino 16 at 10am Saturday, and I
recommend this series highly. It's pricey in movie ticket terms ($18/$20/$22)
but it is the Met and at this point you wouldn't be able to get a ticket AT the
Met for less than $150. If you're interested I'd suggest showing up a bit
early for best seating and perhaps getting advance tickets as these have been
known to sell out.
