Yes, it's time for BASFA's annual Hugo Award Discussion Nights, where we put our heads together and make suggestions about works that we think are good candidates for the 2009 Hugo Awards. Because the ballot is long and the evenings are not unlimited, we will as usual split the discussions over three of the next four weeks. (We'll skip January 26 because it's the Monday of FurCon and we expect a light turnout.)
Working from the bottom of the ballot toward the top, we'll go through the categories in this order: January 19: John W. Campbell Award for Best New Author Best Fan Artist Best Fan Writer Best Fanzine Best Semi-Prozine (Remember that this may be the final year for the Semi-Prozine category; a change is pending that, if ratified, will remove it from the list) February 2: Best Professional Artist Best Editor, Short Form Best Editor, Long Form Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form Best Graphic Story (Best Graphic Story is on the ballot by a one-shot insertion by Anticipation; however, there is a pending constitutional amendment that will, if ratified, add it as a permanent category for at least three years. It appears likely that the Business Meeting will base its ratification decision upon the interest and nominations in this category this year.) February 9: Best Related Book Best Short Story Best Novelette Best Novella Best Novel When our work is complete, I will post the results to the LiveJournal Hugo Recommendations group <http://community.livejournal.com/hugo_recommend/> I will have blank recommendation sheets and a key to names used last year. I'll send the papers around during the main meeting so people can get a head start on filling in nominations. (I'll bring the sheets for all the categories each week.) After the main meeting, those of us interested in discussing the nominees will stick around and spend some time discussing recommendations in more detail. I'll collate and report the results. Due to the extra time we need for the discussions, the President has asked us to show some restraint in our reviews and donations of auction items for the three meetings in question.
