FWIW: Some years ago I gave up on China Meiville despite a very enthusiastic recommendation from a highly trusted source; was also greatly disappointed recently against expectations set for Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian.
Questions for both authors: 1. Whom should we care about and why? 2. What's the point? PS: Try Wm. Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize winning Irionweed for gritty historical fiction worth reading. _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Adrienne Foster Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2010 5:26 PM To: melchar; BASFA list; chris garcia Subject: Re: [Basfa] BASFA minutes for July 12 ...Adrienne reviewed Paul McCartney as he can still pound it out & reviewed China Meiville as lacking comma-sense... Pay for it! _____ From: melchar <[email protected]> To: BASFA list <[email protected]>; chris garcia <[email protected]> Sent: Tue, July 13, 2010 12:17:19 PM Subject: [Basfa] BASFA minutes for July 12 Meeting 1040 July 12, 2010 Trey Haddad, President Chris Garcia, Vice-President Dave Gallaher, Treasurer Galen Tripp, Sargeant at Arms Barbara Johnson-Haddad, Secretary held at Coco's, 1206 Oakmead Parkway (Lawrence Expressway/101 fwy), Sunnyvale Began at 8:ish We established a party jar 35 people attended Secretary's report: the minutes from meeting 1039 were accepted as 'reboot to the head' the Treasurer reported that at meeting 1038 we took in $23.35 in the regular jar and $13.02 in the party jar; while at meeting 1039 we took in $2.00 in the regular jar and $0.35 in the party jar the Vice President reported an injustice - that he had a cheese-stick missing its cheese - which was quickly remedied; then he stated that there was a new 'Drink Tank' out on efanzines.com <http://efanzines.com/> , as well as a new 'Exhibition Hall' and 'I'm fine, how are you?' The President had nothing fannish to report Announcements: Glenn announced that this meeting is silent running, no sirens, no lights, then mentioned events that will be happening months and months from now Dave C announced that Disneyland will be closing Star Tours to rebuild it as Star Tours 2 & announced that we are now down to having only 3 Bullwinkles restaurants Chris announced that someone died & also announced that the NASfic will be in Raleigh, NC Lisa announced that Big Harold was here [we cheered!] & announced that California Xtreme is being held at the Hyatt July 17-18 Ken announced that the Dark Shadows con is this weekend, July 16-18 in Burbank & announced that this year on Sept 18 is Creature Feature Night 2 Carole announced that she won best presentation Journeyman costume at Westercon & announced that she'll be a presentation judge at the Raleigh NASfic Reviews: Westercon was many times reviewed: Glenn has some room woes, he spent a lot of time at the Westercon table & he thought Lisa handled the parties really well, he had a good time; [tall] Kevin spent his time helping Kuma-bear with the Tonopah bid - started to worry they might win - and then had adventures with his van; Carole noticed that many things were being done at the last minute at-con, she thought the art show was small & the party rooms were tiny; Bill didn't find the programming very varied, thought the con was under-attended but still had a good time; Lisa enjoyed the space programming & the 1 steampunk panel & she enjoyed the hotel [and then had a Baycon flashback, oops] and they had a good drive back; Andy thought it was a pretty weak con, with weak parties, some panels were good and the function space was oddly allocated; Dave C was happy in the Dealer's room and noted the greying of fandom Adrienne reviewed Paul McCartney as he can still pound it out & reviewed China Meiville as lacking comma-sense Julie reviewed a 'lost' Dr Who episode she viewed, Crusade, as interesting and rather good and she's glad they managed to preserve old Doctor episodes Dave C reviewed Disney's 'the world of color' as he saw it from the rear but it was still wonderful & reviewed Glen Beck's book 'The Overton Window' as based upon the reviews he read about it that it sounds pretty awful Chris reviewed Crater Lake as very beautiful; reviewed 'Eclipse' as tolerable & reviewed 'The Last Airbender' as she would rather watch 'Eclipse' 10 times before seeing it again Glenn reviewed Patricia McKillip's 'The Tower at Stony Wood' as there were themes of disorientation in it, he liked it and thinks it's worth full price we auctioned off Trey for his birthday for $7.00 to me; then birthday auctioned off Dave G to Spring for $10; then auctioned off jigsaw puzzles for $2.00, $0.25, $4.00; posters for $0.25; books for $0.25 & $3.00 We adjourned at = 9:54 And the rumor of the week was: 'please let it be blood' -- ******************* She/whispered/'Oh/my/goodness/what/are/all/these/squirrels/doing/here?'
