Back at the end of the 1990s, one of the best bits of SF-genre television was the Canadian action/drama/psychological-suspense series 'La Femme Nikita' that raised paranoia to new levels of art -- and one of the best things about that show was Alberta Watson, who played the fictional, Machiavellian covert-ops agency's operating boss, Madeline, playing her as about the last word in ruthless, poker-faced efficiency. 'Madeline' was the most unforgettable character in a memorable series.
Ms. Watson was diagnosed with late-stage lymphoma in 1998, during the show's second season, and she continued to turn in brilliant performances while going through chemotherapy. (I see that she was also noted for a fine performance in a Fox Television production called '24'. Some may have heard of it.) She was still well enough in 2010-2011 to play Senator Madeline Pierce in CW's semi-remake 'Nikita', a clear nod to her iconic character in the earlier series. Alberta Watson died today in her native Toronto, of complications from cancer. She will be greatly missed. _______________________________________________ Basfa mailing list [email protected] http://lists.basfa.org/listinfo.cgi/basfa-basfa.org
