It was also reported that Saturday, May 14th was Star Wars night at Municipal Stadium where the Giants played against the Colorado Rockies farm team, the Modesto Nuts. Tuesday, June 28th will be cartoon and princess night at which attendees are welcome to dress as their chosen princess or cartoon character. It was also reported that tickets for an event at Martinelli Park are available for $49 which includes a meal and two adult drinks, however, the acting minute taker failed to record the name or date of the event. New members Sten and Evangeline introduced themselves along with their visiting friend Chvonne. Sten and Evangeline recently moved to California from Ireland (although Sten is originally from Sweden). Sten stated that he likes CA and said “five out of five, would move again.” New member Rob also introduced himself and stated that he has 8,300 science fiction paperback books that he is looking to sell. Rob stated that he can be reached at 831 425 2147 (calls only, no texts) or [email protected] Announcements: JC announced that this weekend is the Milpitas International BBQ & Festival. The festival runs from 10 am to 6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, May 21st and 22nd. JC stated that 25,000 people attended in 2015. Their website is milpitaschamber.org/bbq JC also announced that BayCon 2016 is coming up on Friday, May 27th through Monday, May 30th. BayCon will be held at the San Mateo Marriott. Their website is baycon.org JC also announced that on June 10th through June 12th, Starting Arts will be presenting their Spring showcase with the “Not Broadway” theme. JC and Beth stated that their daughter Kaitlyn will be performing. Their website is startingarts.com Chris announced that she is subbing for Kevin and Andy in running the San Jose WorldCon 2018 party at BayCon. Chris states that there will be a Friday night party and it is undecided whether there will also be a Sunday party. Chris states that volunteers are needed for both nights. Alex announced that he is having heart surgery on Tuesday, May 31st. An overnight stay is possible, however he may be released the same day and he will be off work for several days afterward. Alex states that contact via Facebook during this time is welcome. Dave C announced that he will have a table at BayCon and requested that anybody who can answer questions for him regarding the table setup for dealers/authors to contact him as he has not received much information. Carol announced that there are several other conventions on Memorial Day weekend in addition to BayCon. Clockwork Alchemy will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in San Jose. KublaCon will be held at the Hyatt Regency SFO; their website is kublacon.com JC announced that ConVolution, which will be held the first weekend of October, is also looking for volunteers. John announced that this weekend is Maker Faire. Maker Faire will be held May 20th through 22nd in San Mateo. Their website is makerfaire.com/bay-area Dave G announced that Hugo voting opened on May 16th and that the Voter Packets should arrive in roughly a week. Reviews: Beth reviewed Ike’s Place sandwiches at The Plant shopping center as “giant” and “pricey but worth it.” JC added that the sandwiches were “absolutely fabulous.” John reviewed his partial Hugo reading and endorsed Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, Uprooted by Naomi Novik, and Cat Pictures Please by Naomi Kritzer. Dave C reviewed Johnny Alucard by Kim Newman as “worth full price.” Adrienne reviewed Captain America stating that she enjoyed it and that it was fun. Carol reviewed a visit to Wisconsin to visit her mother-in-law for her 90th birthday as “a good celebration”. Carol also reviewed Costume Con 34 in Madison, WI stating that there were a few small issues but that “first timers loved it.” Carol states that she helped judge a tote bag competition which included a wood tote bag with wood tools. Carol states that the con was “worth full price” and that it will be in Toronto, Canada next year. Fred reviewed The Just City by Jo Walton as “excellent” and states that he is surprised that it was not nominated for a Hugo. Fred states that he highly recommends it especially if you are interested in philosophy. Ashley reviewed the British TV show Black Mirror as “very well done and enjoyable but not for children.” Ashley also reviewed select episodes of the documentary miniseries The Sixties and The Seventies as “very interesting and informative but still entertaining and accessible.” We did auctions We adjourned at 9:26 pm Rumor of the Week was “Yeeesss, touch the wood”
