for this year) as (tall)Kevin is not here as frequently, and will be a Hugo
admin next year.

Tank. Probably after Gallifrey. $9/ea.

Reviews

JohnO:
East Bay Comic-con in Concord, just a few hundred people in the Crowne Plaza.
Used even the cafe seating area for programming. Interesting variety, plenty of
comic books. Costume contest was from stunning to a 6 year old Princess Leia.
Was only $8 at the door ($6 in advance). Venders sounded pleased. ChrisO:
Costume Contest was pretty well done. Excellent costumes. Brad: Asked how many
had Golden Age stuff - maybe 2, but a lot of older stuff.
Cheap E-Books: The Wrong Unit - A Novel by Rob Dircks. The future, humanity
confined to small space with helper robots. One robot is absconded with a human
baby to a remote place. It was the wrong bot. Worth the $1 or so...
Cloak Games: Thief Track by Jonathan Moeller. Future with Elves from another
dimension taking over the Earth. Treating the humans like cattle. Main
character raised to be a thief. Fun ride, but the author should have paid for
an editor! Was only $0.99, but the sequel was $1.99!
No Honor in Death by Eric Thompson. Honor Harrigan lite. Military space opera,
without the tech details. Plot elements pitched from other places... Barely
worth $1.99.
Ruth: reading Neil Giaman's Norse Gods, more traditional stories done in Gaiman
style. Worth full price, and multiple copies. Audio book is by Gaiman!!!
Adrienne:
La La Land: (dissenting opinion) Overrated! OMG! Slow script, tedious. Plot did
not grab her, and disappointed by the ending. Washed her brain out with
Chicago... Art direction was good. Mo: (well princess poly-head) Thought it was
genius. Having lived in LA, seeing people chasing their dreams, this touched on
the fantasy that is LA. The jazz is present - how it riffs and exchanges on
each other - and is ever changing. Strong jellybean colors, tap dancing on
asphalt and on cars. Beautifully done. Voices seem weak. Modern take on
musicals. Lisa: There is no middle ground - either Like or Hate.
Saw live action short nominations: Favorite is Timecode, about security guards
in a parking lot where something odd happens. Not one Brit or US entry!
Today went out to lunch with a colleague, went to Adamson's French Dip in
Sunnyvale. OMG - amazeballs!!! Even with long wait and the cost.
Brad:
Went to California Antiquarian Book Festival. Bought 1st edition of Slan. The
seller covered the sales tax.
Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. Talks about the human past. Big topic. Strongly
recommends. Same tradition as Wells' Outline of History (1919) Second book will
be Homo Deus.
First episode of the second half of season 7 of the Walking Dead. May be more
group orientated. Has promise.
Bill:
Saw Cirque du Soleil's Luzia. Best performances were the contortionists in the
second half. Didn't notice (m)any non-whites.
Sing: Had a good time. If you liked Zootopia, you'll like this. Worth
Netflixing. American Idol taken to small-town animal cities.
Gerald: Attended the play Uncanny Valley. About artificial intelligence. Goes
in different directions than expected. Hard SF, but far away from The Cold
Equations. Don't read the reviews, as they give away an important plot point.
Extraordinary and interesting play.
Alex: Batman Lego Movie: Absolutely fun and fantastic. From head to tail, lots
of in-jokes. Continues Batman from Lego Movie. Wonderful voice acting. Doesn't
take itself seriously. Worth a movie ticket. JohnO: Enjoyed it as well. Alfred
is more the secondary star.
Carole: New to them restaurant: Falafel Stop in Sunnyvale. Excellent. They make
their own Pita Bread. Generous portion, tasty, well cooked. There's also one on
Meridian.
Yochanon:
Colony on USA season 2 just began. Loved it.
Powerless: Not good.
BASFA minutes: Wonderful. The best. Saved him on his WorldCon memberships.
Rasputins has a book section at their Bascom store. Not a great selection, but
cheap.
DaveC: Saw the last episodes of the Good Place. They stuck the landing.

We did auctions.

Meeting adjourned at 21:49 and the Rumor of the week is: Apollo has left the
ship.
