Reviews
JC: I am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I
am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I am groot. I am groot.
[Translated GotGv2: if vol1 is 100, this is 85.] Great Mall Century is now all
assigned seating lounger. 3D effect was nice. Some tear jerking moments. Loved
the soundtrack, Fox on the Run is stuck in his head.
Ric: Thinks it's as good as vol1. Music was well done. Probably setting the
tone for the next few Marvel films. Worth full price.
JohnO: Definitely wants to see it again and own on DVD. There were many
1-second Easter eggs. Stick around for the credits.
Gerald: Valerie Frenkel has written a sendup of GotG "The Mockeries of the
Galaxies" with a thinly disguised Trump character.
DaveC: Did not contain Suffragette City which was in the trailer. Loved the
film. More ambitious then the first film.
Mo: Had the original comics, but didn't care for the characters. Jim Starling
improved the series.
JohnO:
Finished Too Like the Lightning, by Ada Palmer. (Hugo) A bit of a slog. Took 2
full weeks to read. Dense style. Some passages boring. Fatal flaw: It's the
first half of two books, and has no conclusion.
Went to Santa Cruz, nice and relaxing. The beaches were cold.. Went to see the
Wylie Minx Burlesque show. Hit the Boardwalk. Star Wars pod game was actually
functional!
ChrisO: There's a Mexican restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz El Palomar with the
best Flan!
Yochanan: SVCC: Had a great time! Didn't feel too crowded. He volunteered on
Sunday. Had a bang up time - worth more than full price. Was easy to get into
panels.
Gerald: Woz's personality permeates the con.
JohnO: Woz was more visible last year, but this year he had a booth. His fee
went to a local dog park.
Ric: So much better than last year. Matured quickly.
Chris: There were interesting panels that weren't extra cost.
DaveG: Saw Hamilton with Spring and Sarah Gailey (both Hugo finalists). Second
time seeing it, much more rewarding experience.
DaveC:
Finished The Water Knife, Paolo Bacigalupi. Near future, black-ops agent
working for water cartel. A mean novel and a good read.
JC: The Nerdvana Podcast (#49) with the author.
Saw Ghost in the Shell. The smart people were avoiding it. Don't go.
Ric: Visually amazing. Didn't care for the twisting of her origin. Enjoyed the
movie.
Yochanon: Visually stunning, well done. He didn't know the baggage.
EvilKevin: Drove to Eureka for the Avenue of the Giants 10k on Sunday.
Beautiful run, first non-urban race. Placed 62 of 530. May do it again.
Ric:
The Circle: First saw it as a stage play at SJSU, the read the novel (which
will make you feel creepy using FaceBook et al..) The movie is a little draggy
in the first 3/4, last 1/4 went for a different ending - which is much like the
difference in Brazil endings.
Read The King Killer Chronicles: Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Amazing
book. Lin-Manuel Miranda lifted a bit for Hamilton. First of a trilogy, but
only first 2 are out. Highest recommendation. A game has also come out of the
books.
Adrienne:
Mo and her went to the Peppermill for 2 nights, and went to the spa. There were
problems with their room, but the hotel acted swiftly on them.
Mo: Had a great time.
Finished consuming Presentation Short-Form Hugo Finalists. Probably will go
with Doctor Who.
We held an auction.
Meeting adjourned at: 21:35 and the rumor was: I am Groot.
