According to his professional bio, reprinted in a couple of articles
reporting his death, the role of Spock was initially offered to
Landau, but he turned it down.

Here's a photo of him at age seventeen, working as a cartoonist for
the New York Daily News. He looked uncannily like a youthful Spock.
