Reviews

Baycon
JC: Was toastmaster. Had an awesome time. Lot of fun. 15 panels. 8 in one day.
Kept very busy. Con was good to him. (Also had done the the graphics for the
con). Received a couple awards. Nearly 800 people in attendance. Next year for
2020 is The Future is Now. Worth full price, looking forward to next year.
Lisa: Hotel rooms were disappointing. First room had No drawers, or places to
put luggage. Switched to mini-suite, slightly larger closet but still no
drawers or luggage racks. Tubs are big walk-in showers (seats are available).
TV in the room had never been plugged in. The con was very nice. Schedule was
online ahead of time, which was great for scheduling parties (especially the
Harold memorial). Already bought membership for next year.
ChrisO: Excellent slate of guests. JC was a great toastmaster. Very interesting
people, met new people. Flaw was with the renovation. Good con.
Kennita: Grenadine rocked. Updates came throughout the con.
DaveC: Was in the dealers room. Sales were alright. Call out to the fanzine
lounge run by Chuck Serface.
JohnO: Really enjoyed “Small Gathering for Briana Wu” was very interesting talk
about her campaign in Massachusetts District 8. And “Branding a Convention”
with JC.
Gayle: Filk was wonderful. Bed was comfy, but room had no storage. Open/Closing
ceremonies were interesting. Lots of good Science panels. Appreciated
Grenadine, especially with the free WiFi.

Godzilla
Ric: The third of the Monarch series. If you don’t like Godzilla films, you
won’t like it. If you like them, you’ll love it. There is a cookie. Two thumbs
up and a roar to the heavens. 3D was pretty good (was not a jump out, more of a
look in to a tank.) Soundtrack is awesome. Fight scenes were the clearest of
the post-rubber suit.
JohnO: Been watching monster movies since he could control the TV himself.
Loved them all (even with flaws). Takes all the best, and some of the cheesy,
and wraps it up in one film. The Plot is on rails. Effects are good. Enjoyed.
Recommend. IMAX is overkill. There are hooks to the original films. Highly
recommend.
Bill: Went last night. Requisite amount of monster stomping, and cool military
tech. There is some plot. Had a good time. Worth IMAX. Soundtrack was up to 11.
Don’t delay if you want to see it.
Carole: She has a connection to the '50s US translation of the original film,
so Godzilla has a special place in her heart. Worth big screen.
Kennita: Thought it was awful. Too dark. Too complicated. Saw in 3D, doesn’t
really need it. Enjoyed the originals, but this new one is more “noisy”.

Saw the documentary on the tech company General Magic. A brief company with
lasting impact. Very well done on the chronology, and the follow on effects of
the company. generalmagicthemovie.com <http://generalmagicthemovie.com/>

Went to Balticon (balticon.org/wp53/ <http://balticon.org/wp53/>). Helped as
guest liaison for Elizabeth Bear and Scott Lynch, who were both low maintenance
guests. Also worked the masquerade. Decent turnout. Saw a lot of east coast
friends. Has been asked to come back next year (for the filk guests.)
Bill: Was invited to participate on two panels. Filk room was good, and he got
good comments. Was fun. Daily nonstops from San Jose to Baltimore on Southwest.
Vikas
Astronomy on Tap last Wed went very well. Three talks, including: Exoplanets,
and Science in Science-Fiction. Next one will be in a couple months. Some
BASFAns were there. Used Facebook ads, and it worked. facebook.com/AoTSouthBay/

DaveC
Tried to enjoy Happy on SyFy. Stars Christopher Maloney as a psychotic killing
machine and his imaginary friend Happy. His violence level has peaked, and
can’t take it anymore.
Ric: Sounds like a mix of Taxi Driver and Harvey. syfy.com/happy

Binged all six episodes of Good Omens. Thorough endorsement. Hilarious and
wonderful. Tennant is wonderful as Crowley. OOPS - everything’s a spoiler.
Amazon Prime. Effects are wonderful. Twists that compound.

Andy
This past Saturday saw One Man Star Wars Trilogy at the 3Below. One guy doing
everything from the trilogy. Started off unsure if this was going to be
terrible, but it was absolutely hilarious. True to Star Wars. Worth full price.
onemanstarwars.com <http://onemanstarwars.com/>
Lisa: Saw it on Friday. Was glad she saw it. Had a good laugh. Hit all the
story highpoints.

Lisa
June 1 was the one year anniversary of Harold’s passing. It’s been really
rough. One Man Star Wars Trilogy helped. Spent time on Sunday with friends.

JC
Saw Brightburn. Retelling of Superman origin without the character names, with
a dark twist. This kid did not come from a benevolent world... James Gunn wrote
and directed. Super-dark take on Superman. There is a possibility of sequels of
other DC-ish characters. Gory. It lacks in surprise. No payoff. Is OK. Matinee.
Effects are good. www.brightburn.movie <http://www.brightburn.movie/>

John(new)
Went to the New Parkway theatre in Oakland to see Worlds of Ursula K. LeGuin.
Documentary of her career and life. Recommends. Will be on PBS later in the
year. worldsofukl.com <http://worldsofukl.com/>

Gayle
JC’s interview with Bay Con Fan Guest of Honor Wanda Kurtcu was pretty amazing.

The Tammy Tip Jar was dispersed (not counted, but over $40), and renamed as the
Party Jar.

There was an auction

Meeting adjourned at approximately 9:30 and the rumor was: This time Godzilla
gets the girl.
