TOR and the author’s family have made an agreement to bring back his catalog, plus unfinished works. slate.com/culture/2019/11/john-ford-science-fiction-fantasy-books.html <http://slate.com/culture/2019/11/john-ford-science-fiction-fantasy-books.html> Adrienne Bay Area Ghost Hunters has three meetups coming up: November 24: Meet and greet at the haunted Chuck E Cheese in east San Jose (Dutch Treat). December 6: Tea at Ainsley House ($60). December 14: Holiday meetup at the Hayes mansion ($35) Her encroaching neighbor issue has been settled, and is working on the permitting to start the renovation work on her house. Mo: This means that she has at least six to nine months to fine a new place to live. Debbie City of Saratoga, tree lighting on Friday, November 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the downtown area. Saturday, December 14, the city of Saratoga will be hosting a celebration of light. All religions are invited to display their lights. JohnO 41 years ago yesterday the Star Wars Holiday Special was shown on CBS. Andy: The Disney+ series The Mandalorian has call backs to the special. Jon Favreau is apparently interested in doing another Star Wars holiday special. Ric: The Holiday Special had the first appearance of Boba Fett. Atehus: Rifftraxx has riffed it. DaveG Cleaning out the house, and brought in some movie posters. Take what you want. Ken Legion of Rassilon is this Friday. Will be showing the second story of the E-Space Trilogy: State of Decay. 7:30 p.m. at the Denny’s in Campbell (near the Pruneyard.) lor.club <http://lor.club/> DaveC Sometime soon Disney+ will be showing the Simpsons in the original 4:3 ratio. Howard Waldrop will be writer Guest of Honor at LosCon. He’s the dest kept secret in SF/Fantasy Tom: Make sure you go to one of his readings. Reviews Lisa Went to OryCon in Portland, Oregon. Nice reasonable sized con, with all the usual goodies. Had fun, will go back next year. They would like to see more people. Reminds her of the BayCons of the past… orycon.org <http://orycon.org/> Harold: Neuro-diverse friendly convention. Designated tables for quiet, and signs to accept others at gaming tables. Very much appreciated. Gayle: Very nice science programing. Nice view of river. Well run. As soon as hotel block opens up, you should get your room. Gerold: Was lightly scheduled on programming, but he was added to another item. His books were being sold at the Book Universe table, and they sold five (a record for consignment.) Good con, good people, beautiful view from the hotel. He’s been going for 15 years. Letha: Their website is out of date. Stopped at the Lake Shasta Caves. Medium sized, 800 steps up at times. Lots of stalagmites and stalactites, and old explorer graffiti. It’s a privately run concession surrounded by national parks. Just off I-5. Don’t recommend tripping on a curb at Target. However, Kaiser’s been good on the checkups. Gayle Saw two performances at the San Francisco Opera: Hansel & Gretel. Delightful, especially the dream sequence. Excellent singing. English with english supertitles. She can get you subscriber pricing. sfopera.com <http://sfopera.com/> Gerald: If you’ve seen into the woods. The ballet between acts 3 & 4 is the antidote. Manon Lescaut. Early Puccini. Manon gets transported to New Orleans and dies in the Louisiana territory desert. Wonderful soprano. JohnO Latest of the Expanse series has been released. The novella Auberon is a stand-alone, but having a background with the series would be useful. Not the best of the series. If you’ve enjoy the previous stories, get it. Amazon lists only Kindle & audio. Disney+: Only have watched the Mandalorean. Not quite what was expected from the previews, but worth it. The latest must–have toy may be coming from this. They even have The Simpsons. Ric: Number of items not as awe inspiring. Pacing of the Madnaloean as half-hours was quick. Also watched The Cat From Outer-space. It both holds up and doesn’t. Charlies Angels. Fun ride, but don’t expect anything from it. A couple of the actresses are aren’t being challenged in their roles. Patrick Stewart plays a Bosley (more of a title...) There are also many Angels (not just the three.) Tom Cancer is no fun. Not worth matinee. Glad to be back in the swing of things. The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heap by H.G. Parry. Set in Wellington NZ. More enjoyable than expected. Adrienne Bay Area Ghost Hunters had meetup in Benicia. Spent a couple nights at the Union Hotel (historic/haunted) Overall, was disappointed with the room. Only one waste can (in the bathroom) and no tissues. Plus it didn’t have extra deadbolt (anyone with a master key could get in.) The food on the main street was good (except the continental breakfast at the hotel!) The Indian restaurant was the only one to stay open in the afternoon. They have streets that go up to the water! Mo: Beautiful, touristy, worth a visit. Old state capitol. Ric Watched Daybreak on Netflix. Post-apocalyptic teen angst drama. The bombs took out the adults, kids lived on. Set in Glendale, with the cliques taking over areas. Watched seven of the ten episodes. Kind of a Breakfast Club crossed with Mad Max. Read a New Yorker article call The Final Frontier by Michael Chabon, about the relationship with his unconscious dying father, and the influence it had on the authors writing of the Star Trek Short Treks episode Q&A. Chabon is also writing (and show running) the new Picard series. newyorker.com/magazine/2019/11/18/the-final-frontier <http://newyorker.com/magazine/2019/11/18/the-final-frontier> Atheus Finally watched Guardians of the Galaxy. Would have paid to watch it. Dumb fun, cleverness, and eye candy. Will have to see Vol 2 sometime in the next 10 years. Audiobook of Lock In by John Scalzi. A plague hits worldwide, and the story centers on how society uses medical advancement and cybernetics to cope, and how it goes wrong. Worth the Audible price, but the delivery could have been better. Science was mostly soft, but detailed when it needed to be. Gerold Alternative Apocalypse is a collection of short stories about different apocalypses. Lot of good reading. Best story was The Last Dog by Mike Resnick. The first and longest of the stories is based on Christian mythology. Also a fascinating essay called Not My Apocalypse. Auction Meeting was adjourned at 21:46 and the rumor was: "Coming ten years from now: Charlie’s Angels - Infinity War"
