While waiting for the House of Mouse (Disney+) to decide to make "The War between the Land and the Sea" available outside the UK, some time in 2026 -- the Doctor Who spinoff 5-part miniseries that was the final fruit of Disney's deal with BBC) -- you can watch the 1972 Old Who six part serial "The Sea Devils" that introduced that species, here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDwxaVowoMs Featured are Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, Katy Manning as Jo Grant, and Roger Delgado as The Master. Sorry, the Bridadier and UNIT are not in evidence (UNIT is referred to, a few times), but the (real) Royal Navy is heavily featured. This serial, from Series 9, is fondly remembered for the experimental, electronic incidental music by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's Malcolm Clarke. The (also respected) script is by Malcolm Hulke. Pacing, direction, and budget are, well, Old Who. The "Sea Devils" are basically the same idea as the Silurians, also the brainchild of Malcolm Hulke: "Hey, we were Terrans first, and we're now rather cheesed off." The Sea Devils also put in a brief appearance in the 2022 Easter special "Legend of the Sea Devils" (not on YouTube) with Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor. That special, from the Chris Chibnall era, is not well regarded. It was the one set mostly on a pirate ship near my home town of Hong Kong, but in the 19th C. _______________________________________________ Basfa mailing list [email protected] http://lists.basfa.org/listinfo.cgi/basfa-basfa.org
