Secretary's report was duly pondered. The minutes of meetings 1846 was accepted as "mailed and femaled out". Treasurer: No report rec'd. Mr. Vice-President was not present due to being on the road, so I seized power. (Bwu-haha.) President: Not present, therefore nothing fannish to report. Committees: None in evidence. New Business: None. Announcements: Gerald: He and Gayle will attend RadCon in Pasco, WA (near Hanford) this coming (Presidents Day) weekend, and Gerry will have several panels. Bob Brown of B Cubed Press will be one of Publishing Guest of Honor. Duncan: 30 years ago, there was a lot of concern about radiation. Have things changed? Gerald: Other concerns are now more immediate than nuclear war, but there has always been a sense of humour about these matters at RadCon. Bob Brown, for example, was always famous for bunnies that glow in the dark. Gayle: The radioactive bunnies did appear at cons. https://www.radcon.org/ Yochanan: Go Boldly SF observes both the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy being set in SF (RM notes: for values of "SF" approximating Sausalito). Blue & Gold Fleet will do themed cruises around the Bay between Feb. 14 and Mar. 22nd. Several stores at Pier 39 between Feb. 12th and 19th will have a promo with swag, and you'll have to cite the phrase "Live long and prosper" to qualify. Paramount is sponsoring Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Scrap&Sip: Wed. Feb 18th, 5:30pm, 3292 22nd St, SF. It was Ethan Phillips's (Neelix's) birthday on Feb. 8th! Happy 71st, Ethan. Reviews: Yochanan: Movie currently in cinemas: "Iron Lung", an SF/horror film, by Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach, based on a video by the same name, 2026. Has received mixed reviews, praised for its atmosphere, criticised for its slow pace. Slow but intriguing. Produced on a budget. Worth matinee, deserves to be in theatres. Popular with GenZ. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Lung_(film) Rick: Reviewed the most recent (4th and 5th) episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as showing the strength of the production with episodes about (respectively) the Klingon and "photonic" (holographic) cadets, both carried off with panache. Yochanan: looking forward to every episode. Delightful, irreverent, broke the mold, beautiful homage to ST:DS9. These episodes were a nice but entirely implicit way to honour February being Black History Month. Duncan: "Octopus Heart", a short film, drew him because of his appreciation for octopuses. Film is available free on the Internet (https://fawesome.tv/movies/10649135/octopus-heart). Basically has to do with empathy. Gerald: Asked clarification about spelling of the film interviewee's name "Anastazija Zivanovic". Duncan: [protracted observation about the complex relationship between spelling and nationality, including but not limited to the difference between Ukrainian and Russian names] Yochanan: What language was the film in? Duncan: I think it was in English, but it's actually unclear. It wasn't dubbed. RM notes: This short 2024 documentary was made by Serbian-ethnic screenwriter/director Goran Zivanovic, who has been Australian since age 2. His film "examines the emotional aftermath of trauma through the lens of Takotsubo Syndrome [aka Takotsubo cardiomyopathy aka stress cardiomyopathy], also known as Broken Heart Syndrome". IMDB says it was filmed in Australia. It's in English, with Anastazija speaking with a strong Serbian accent. Runtime is just over 40 minutes. Trailer: https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x981ygc Rick: Provided brief review of his SuperbOwl Sunday walk up Alpine Road Regional Trail, as enjoyed by a cheerful crowd enjoying perfect weather and pleasant, shaded surroundings near a bubbling stream. No owls were injured in the production of this walk. Yochanan: 1st: Fallout season 2 just ended. 8 episodes, released weekly on Amazon Prime Video, based on the game of the same name. Post-apocalyptic series. Yochanan loved the retro-futurism, flashbacks. Worth full price. Now airing on Amazon Prime Video, 8 eps. per season. Kennita: Enjoyed it, particular scenes were clearly based directly on the video game. Rick observed that there are three interweaved story lines, that Namibia's Skeleton Coast standing in for The Wasteland was spectacular, and that Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard / The Ghoul largely carried the season. (Yochanan demurred, putting in a good word for co-lead Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean.) Kyle MacLachlan appears in a supporting role as Hank MacLean, Lucy's father. 2nd: Streaming on Prime, "Stargate Origins" (variant name "Stargate Origins: Catherine"), 10 episodes, Web series, each segment about 15 minutes or less, low budget, cast included Connor Trinneer (as Pro. Paul Langford, father of Catherine Langford). 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, not well reviewed. Nonetheless, holds up well, and he considered it worth his time. Rumour of the Week: "Radioactive bunnies are superior to bad bunnies or bad robots." Adjourned at: 20:53 There was no auction. _______________________________________________ Basfa mailing list [email protected] http://lists.basfa.org/listinfo.cgi/basfa-basfa.org
