Running autoconf on configure.ac at tag 2.0 produces an error:

configure.ac:3: error: possibly undefined macro: AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
      If this token and others are legitimate, please use m4_pattern_allow.

I'm not familiar with autoreconf, but I naively tried running it on the 
directory.  I've attached the history...

The README doesn't detail the installation at this level, so I'm guessing at 
what I should be doing.  :-)

You do have automake installed, right? Have you tried running autoreconf 
instead of autoconf and friends directly?
