image xlink:href

I have tried to view a document that has the image tag.  It gives me the message: "The 
attribute 'xlink:href' of the element <image> is required.

The image tag is in the document with the xlink:href attribute.  Is this tag not yet 
supported by batik?  Or maybe I am missing something?
