Thanks. I ran the examples from my development environment using the
source distribution and they worked great.
I then created 2 simple examples:
1) The first flowed some text inside a rectangle
2) I then tried the same example using a circle as the flowRegion:
In this case the text did not show up.
My assumption at this point is that the level of support for the
flowText stuff does not yet include this type of functionality (i.e.
flowing inside non-rectangular shapes).
However before I give up I thought I'd just run this by everyone in case
I am making some error.
This is correct currently flowText in Batik only supports
rectangular flow regions.
P.S. I searched the FAQ and archives for info on this question of level
of extension support so if I missed the answer consider this a pre-apology.

I have downloaded the latest binary distribution and run Squiggle
from the command line using Sun JVM 1.4.01_01. The application comes
up fine and I can load and display SVG files. However when I load the
flowtext related examples xml-batik/samples/extensions/flowText.svg I
do not see any text displayed even though it appears to be specified
in the source. Can I assume the flowtext stuff is not supported yet
or is there some problem?
Please read the FAQ. Because these are not yet part of the
standard they are not part of the 'standard' execs. You may
run these examples using the 'extension' jars in the subdir of
the binary distribution.
