The problem is that the one image is gray scale JPEG.
We interpret this as linear gray scale, which causes it to be
lightened.  If you convert these to a more standard RGB JPEG
they will display correctly.  It has nothing to do with the
semi-transparent rect overlapping it.

Incidentally if anyone knows an easy way to get a gamma
corrected gray scale ICC profile we could fix this for
real...
