In my opinion Batik and FOP are correct, and it's the Adobe viewer that is at
fault here. The character put in the svg file actually is the registered
trademark (&#x00ae;). So FOP/Batik try to find the suitable glyph and appear to
find one.
If you want an arrow you should put the arrow character, either entering it
directly or by using the corresponding entity: &#x2192;. I tested and it works.

Closing the bug as invalid, but feel free to re-open it if you think I'm wrong.
