   Andreas' SVG stuff tends to be very good.

   The other suggestion I'll make is to simply popup a small
Text entry box 'over' the SVG document (in a Jframe or it's like) 
when the user chooses to edit text. It should be easy to center 
the text area over the document, and it avoids all the other issues. 
The main drawback is that it's not WYSIWYG.
